Surf Sistas - Cornwall Improver Surf Weekend Review

This review is special one because not only are Surf Sistas a dream to holiday with, BUT, this trip was where Kat’s Surf Forecasts came about. Finishing a glorious surf with the girls, I decided to share my idea of the channel and there and then we filmed the first clip that featured on my first ever YouTube video. Lucy - you are the best.

Why do I choose the Surf Sistas Improver Weekend?

Having already been on a trip to France with the lovely ladies, it wasn’t hard to chose to go back with them for a more local, confidence building weekend. I had just bought my first surfboard too - an 8ft Torq named Koko and wanted to improve my turtle rolling so that I felt more comfortable paddling outback at one of my local’s beaches!

Where?

The weekend took place at the famous surfing beach Fistral Beach, Newquay. Luckily for me this is just a short hour and a bit away, but Surf Sistas have nailed it by including coach travel from London Victoria on Friday evening to Newquay in the price - a landlocked surfers dream! We stayed in the lovely Esplande Hotel which is a hotel overlooking South Fistral. What. A. View. Although I park there quite a lot, having the opportunity to stay a couple of nights and opening my window to the view was just bliss.

Who’s it for?

We had a mixture of surfing experience in our group - some had been on a board a couple of times, others had the confidence going out back but just wanted someone to advice on their technique. Quite frankly, it didn’t matter on your ability as it’s just the perfect opportunity to get a group of girls party waving together for a weekend! :)
My top tip would be to let the instructors know what you want to get out of it and your ability - they will then know how to focus your lesson for you.

The Lessons

The best thing about these weekends are the amount of surf instructors on board to help. We had three in total, the amazing Sam, Lucy and Laura. The session started by a quick warm up on the sand and establishing our surfing capabilities - from there we were split into our groups and taken out by our instructor.

I asked Sam to help with my turtle rolling and she did not disappoint. I wasn’t allowed to paddle out back until I had done around 10 turtle rolls! Safe to say, I was tired by the time I got there! But it is exactly what I needed and I couldn’t thank Sam enough - I’ve seen her recently and let her know that the memory of her shouting to get me to turtle roll haunts me when I’m surfing on my own! We had three lessons in total, two morning sessions and one afternoon.

Being in England we can’t always be guaranteed good weather or waves but someone was looking down at us that weekend. Bliss 2-3’fters in blue skies - and I caught my first proper memorable green wave! Thank you girls!

The Yoga

Last but certainly not least is Yoga with Mel. Mel is an absolute angel; if you want light hearted fun yoga then she is your lady. The yoga was situated over looking Fistral beach on the grass and if I was being honest, I would of happily just had a nap in the sun. But I can’t resist Mels yoga, helping us get out all them aches and pains from surfing - though not so keen on the tennis ball ones you get us to do!

And in a flash; the weekend was over. Surf, G&T’s, food and belly laughter is how I would sum up the weekend. Everything is easy as and you get a beautiful goody bag with photos of you surfing too soon after! What more could you want.
